Hazelton House
Imella Design has been working with Hazelton House (incorporating Borderline and Rosebank Fabrics) for a decade and we are now very proud to announce that we are the UK distributors for a curated selection of their hand block printed pure linen and cotton textiles.
Imella Design is passionate about hand block printed textiles and has had the joy and privilege of using them in many projects. The fabrics are true works of art: their beauty and success reliant upon the immense skill, experience and patience of the printer and craftsman. Each repeat of the pattern involves applying multiple dye colours with a specific combination of hand-carved wooden blocks (commonly made from pear wood).
Imella Design has seen an increase in demand for hand block printed fabrics over the last few years as traditional skills and craftsmanship have become more desirable and valued in interior decoration.

Crewel
CREWEL
A classic Jacobean design inspired by the crewel embroidery work characteristic of the Stuart reign in England and Ireland during the seventeenth century. The traditional “tree of life” motif is composed of stylised botanical forms, including a thistle bearing vine, blossoms, berries, pomegranate and other exotic fruit. In order to create the effect of Jacobean crewel embroidery, “stitches” of bold colour are applied to the linen ground cloth.
The design is hand blocked using a set of 56 blocks engraved in 1923 and 14 block colours.

Oriental Pheasants
This exceptional hand block pattern dates from the ‘roaring 20s’, and the mixture of tropical foliage and ornate pheasants reflects the japonais influences that were in vogue at that time. The ornate birds nestle in tropical foliage, inter-twined with bamboo, making this an atmospheric and unusual statement piece fabric.
The complex pattern requires considerable skill to print. 27 different colours are used with several blocks per colour. There are approximately 200 blocks laid per metre.
The grandeur of this design is also illustrated by the scale. At a time when most fabrics were 24 inches wide, this pattern is designed at 30 inches to retain the imposing proportions of the pheasant motifs.
