Rachel Alexandra Kershaw

I studied Law at University and had a career as a solicitor for 10 years prior to Imella Design. The legal world absolutely stifled my creativity. I had always wanted to work in Interior Design, I just had to work out the right pathway…

Then in 2010 a beautiful life chapter opened up with the purchase of a farmhouse in the Berwyn Mountains in rural North Wales. I needed thick, heavy and sumptuous country house curtains for every window…this sparked the beginnings of Imella Design which I founded the following year. Interior design and decoration has always been my passion and I was finally able to pursue it by acquiring the skills of traditional hand-stitched curtain making. Learning a craft opened the door to the interior decoration world…

Inspiration for the name "Imella" comes from Rachel's two daughters, Imogen and Ella.

I live and breathe interior design, decoration, textiles and colour.
Imella Design has also seen me through a significant life-change by keeping me motivated and focussed on being a business owner, curtain-maker, interior decorator and also single parent to two wonderful daughters.

I am immensely proud of Imella Design, I love what I do and I am so excited about where I can take it in future.

Britain's rich textile industry woven into a family history

Rachel has a long standing passion for interior design and architecture: textiles are in her blood. Rachel’s mother taught her to sew and helped her to make her first pair of curtains as a 12 year old. Rachel’s grandmothers were weavers in a Lancashire cotton mill and her great-grandfather was a mill engineer running the engine which powered the mill sheds.
